The Newcastle United Midfield situation is something that Eddie Howe is now considering.
There is no dispute about what the preferred choice is.
As things are outstanding, Eddie Howe will always play a midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton.
The quandary of course comes when one or more of these three are not available.
Last season was the cover in midfield Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock.
Because we are now only 11 days of the new season that starts, Sean Longstaff has left and Joe Willock will be missing until after the international break in September.
This means that Eddie Howe currently has only four obvious midfield options, where Lewis Miley treats that first choice trio.
The head coach talks to Post About what that Newcastle United Central situation now looks like:
“We had six[midfieldersvorigseason)enwewillenzes(anavailabilityseason2025/26)[midfielersastseason)AndWeWantsix(AvailablePurthis2025/26Season)[middenveldersvorigseizoen)enwewillenzes(beschikbaarvoorditseizoen2025/26)[midfielderslastseason)andwewantsix(availableforthis2025/26season)
“Now we are (currently) up to four, so that’s a problem for us.
“That is a position in which we look (to strengthen).
“We don’t think Joe Willock’s injury is serious.
“I gave a prognosis of four to six weeks, but that could be less.
“But I think it’s an area that is a bit of a concern.”
Sandro Tonali looked at the entire Tottenham match of the bank, whereby the Italy International reportedly picked up a (hopefully) small knee problem.
Eddie Howe, although they reassure fans on that front:
“Sandro Tonali is fine.
“There is no problem there.
“It was just a precautionary way.
“He wanted to play (against Tottenham), but it was my decision to stop him a bit, just make sure that his knee is fine.”
While the freak serious injury James Maddison was picked up on Sunday, avoiding injuries for important players is a huge priority in the preseason.
With Newcastle United only a week and a half away from playing Aston Villa, making Eddie Howe clear that if/when more signing sessions are added, they will probably not start in Villa Park:
“There is not much time left (to get a player on time to start the first game.
“Especially when you consider that you should get every player informed of how we play, then get into the intricacies of what we do.
“It’s not easy for players to do that right away.”
As Eddie Howe has repeatedly shown in the past, he is always willing to take the long -term representation and not just throw in new signing sessions immediately, even if they are not ready to do themselves straight.
It is ridiculous how there is now an international break, so soon after the season starts. Only two weeks after Newcastle started against Villa a two -week break for internationals.
So three games against Villa (A), Liverpool (H) and Leeds (A), for the gap of fourteen days prior to Wolves at home on Saturday 13 September.
I think the reality is that Eddie Howe will be almost completely dependent on the current Newcastle players as starters for the first three games. Subsequently, new signing sessions that arrive in these next four weeks will mainly be aimed at becoming well involved from mid -September.
The clock taps all fronts and hopefully we can see more additions on top of Elanga and Ramsdale soon.
