The Eames Institute to transform the former Birkenstock campus into a world-class design destination with exhibitions, archives and public creative spaces.
In a daring movement that bridges legacy and innovation, the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity has announced plans to transform the former Birkenstock campus in Marin County into a world-class museum for art and design. With architecture by Herzog & de Meuron And support from the EHDD of San Francisco, the new cultural hub will celebrate the lasting legacy of Ray and Charles Eames – design press that helped to define modern creativity.
A modernist canvas, again conceived
The 88.5 hectare site is located just north of San Francisco in Novato and contains iconic modern architecture from the mid -century, originally designed by John Savage Bolles in the sixties. Known for projects such as Candlestick Park and IBM’s San Jose Campus, Bolles’ wavy warehouse roof and modernist lines will be adjusted in a new architectural story, led by the same team behind Tate Modern in London and the Young Museum of San Francisco.
The vision? An extensive design campus housing compelling exhibitions, makers’ spaces, workshops and culinary and retail experiences -with part of the Eames collection and archives that can be seen. The site also includes open space that is accessible to the public, seamless architecture, landscape and community.
Sharing the vision of my grandparents with the world is the honor of your life, “says Llisa Demetrios, main curator of the Eames Institute.” This expansion lets us bring that legacy to life in ways we have imagined alone.
Creative economy, local impact
The project is not only cultural. Officials from Novato and Marin County see the museum as an important economic director, creating jobs, stimulating tourism and reactivating a site that was left in leaving Birkenstock in 2019. It is in line with the long-term vision of the city to build a cultural destination that reflects the creative energy of Northern California.
The Legacy of Eames is a cultural treasure, “said David C. Howse, president of California College of the Arts.” This new campus will inspire the public and offer students an unparalleled learning experience.
A living inheritance of design
Since the public was launched in 2022, the Eames Institute has worked to expand the reach of philosophy of the Eameses: that design is a tool for problem solving, curiosity is super power and great ideas can come from anywhere. Through digital stories, exhibitions and stewardship of William Stout Architectural Books And Lars Müller PublishersThe institute has left all its mark.
This museum represents the next chapter – a based in place, goal and public access.
