Dundee 2-0 Celtic: Scottish champions stunned after first league defeat – Soccer News

Celtic were left stunned after a 2-0 defeat away to Dundee in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday in a match postponed due to fan protests against the visitors’ sign.

Kelechi Iheanacho rattled the woodwork after lashing a speculative long-range effort into the post early on.

However, it was Dundee who took the initiative inside 18 minutes when Clark Robertson latched onto Cameron Congreve’s sharp corner to stun the visitors.

A flashy counter-attack from the hosts in first-half stoppage time exacerbated Celtic’s frustrations. Congreve was involved again when his cross was met by Joe Westley, whose tap took a fortuitous deflection off Cameron Carter-Vickers before curling into the back of the net to double Dundee’s lead.

Celtic had a whopping 87.1% possession after the break but were unable to make this count as the hosts suppressed every threat, limiting Brendan Rodgers’ side to just two shots on target from nine attempts.

Celtic were given a lifeline in the 70th minute as they were awarded a penalty following a handball call, but VAR was able to overturn the decision on reflection.

The defending champions then thought they had halved the deficit in the 77th minute, but Reo Hatate’s effort was cleared off the line by Luke Graham as Celtic suffered a defeat, leaving them five points behind leaders Hearts.

Data Debrief: Dundee ends 24 year wait

Celtic lost in all competitions for the first time since September 1988 in Dundee. They had won 28 of their previous 36 visits in that time and this result ends their longest unbeaten run away from home against any team in club history.

Meanwhile, this momentous win means Dundee have ended a run of 46 games without a win against Celtic in all competitions (D7 L39), since a 2-0 win in May 2001.

Congreve was a star of the show for Dundee, and his assist for the opener was his fourth of the Premiership campaign, with no player registering again in the Scottish top flight.
