UFC veteran Brendan Schaub has explained to Gable Steveson why Jon Jones isn’t necessarily the best mentor for him in mixed martial arts.
In the eyes of many, Jon Jones is one of the greatest fighters in the history of mixed martial arts. While he may be in discussions about that title, there is of course something to be said for the many controversies he has been involved in outside of active competition.
Jon Jones has clearly accomplished some amazing things and has great natural ability, but his legacy will be forever tainted, and you’d have to say he created much of it himself.
In one recent video on his channel, Brendan Schaub gave some advice to Gable Steveson, who is currently coached by Jon Jones.
Brendan Schaub’s take on Jon Jones/Gable Steveson
“There’s only one Jon Jones. So, if you go, Jon, what did you do to prepare for Gustafsson in the first fight, he says, ‘party’. Showed up the week before, beat the hell out of him. I don’t know if that’s the best advice, man.”
“I don’t know if that’s the smartest advice. You have a lot of work to do. There’s only one Jon. The reason he’s the GOAT is because of what he did in prison.” Octagon. He’s not the GOAT as far as outside the Octagon. If you follow the GOAT talk, feats inside the Octagon and beyond, it’s Mighty Mouse. It’s Mighty Mouse or it’s GSP.”
“Those are guys who would be great mentors. Mighty Mouse, even though he’s smaller, would be a much better mentor to advise you on how to deal with fame, women, family, sponsorships, life outside the UFC, expanding your footprint and expanding your business reach and things like that.”
“I would contact that guy, or GSP, another great one.”
“Jon is a wild boy, and that makes him one of the greatest of all time. You must be absolutely delusional if you’re not training for a World Cup fight and thinking you can win it. There’s only one of him. That’s not the guy you want to listen to.”
