Holy Holm believes that a lot of Ronda Rousey’s complaints about her departure from the UFC were self-inflicted.

Rousey’s star power and success inside the Octagon paved the way for women’s fighting under the UFC banner. ‘Rowdy’ was one of the most beloved athletes in MMA, but her downfall was quite brutal after a knockout loss to Holm in 2015. The following year, Rousey was stopped in 48 seconds by Amanda Nunes before retiring from professional MMA competition.

Since her retirement, Rousey has lashed out at fans and media members. During an interview with MMAFighting.comHolm shared her belief that Rousey was not doing herself any favors.

“I think Ronda definitely didn’t like how her career ended, but she’s largely responsible for that,” Holm said. “Because she backed herself off. You see some of these champions who are reigning champions, they hit a hiccup and they at least look at the crowd, look at the camera, look at the fans, face it. I believe in a little bit more respect in that aspect, and I think a lot of fans were like she had just left.”

“If she came back for a fight, people would be cheering her on. I feel like she always feels like everyone is against her, but she has pulled herself away from the fans instead of them leaving her. Martial arts fans and fight fans can be cruel, but they are also fans, they are fans of the sport. They realize that things happen, not everything is always perfect, and I think if she had faced it differently there would be no judgment, but I think if she had would have dealt with it differently, it probably wouldn’t have been as negative as a whole in her own mind and how she felt.

Rousey recently got the MMA world moving again when she posted some new training videos. “Rowdy” said her love for the sport began to resurface. Rousey is reportedly in talks for a boxing match with Katie Taylor, although UFC CEO Dana White denies the claim.
