Don’t Blame the Kia K4 Hatchback for Being a Hatchback in the Crossover World – Jalopnik

Last week I reported on the news that Kia has released official pricing for its hot new 2026 K4 Hatchback. Despite being called the K4 Hatchback, there was a debate in the comments about whether it should be referred to as an SUV rather than a hatchback. This surprised me for a couple of reasons: first, it’s right there in the name, and second, the comments section usually lights up with dissent when small, two-wheel drive vehicles with hatchbacks are called crossovers and SUVs with claims that they shouldn’t be called that, despite the way the makers market them.

So I’m here to tell you that the 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback is a hatchback, not an SUV. It’s not Kia’s fault for existing in the crossover world. The K4 Hatchback may look like a modern crossover from some angles thanks to the black wheel arch cladding, like on the gold car in the photos you see here, but the reality is that it is a hatchback. End of story. (Also, the regular K4 sedan is the same style as the hatch, and I don’t see you calling it a crossover.)

In terms of size, it is in line with other hatchbacks, because it is a hatchback

The 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback is 174.4 centimeters long and 56.3 centimeters high (about 4.7 feet tall). The K4 Hatchback will compete with the Honda Civic Hatchback, the Mazda 3 Hatchback and the Toyota Corolla Hatchback – and the Kia K4 GT-Line Turbo could potentially be seen as a Volkswagen GTI competitor.

Of that bunch, the GTI is the smallest, at 168.9 inches long and a height that’s actually taller than the K4 at 57.7 inches. The Corolla is the only other hatch that is shorter than the Kia at 172 centimeters in length, but also happens to be taller at 57.1 centimeters. The only competitor with a lower overall height than the K4 Hatchback is the Honda Civic, but it is also almost two inches longer than the Kia. And the K4 Hatchback is just 0.4 inches larger than its sedan sibling.

The whole idea of vehicle classifications has become arbitrary in the 21st century; it seems there are no hard and fast rules for defining features that distinguish crossovers from hatchbacks. That said, it’s nonsense to call a front-wheel drive car that’s over five feet tall and called the K4 Hatchback a crossover. So I’m going to stick my head out and make a bold claim: I think the Kia K4 Hatchback is a hatchback. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
