President Donald Trump of the United States has indicated new action against left-wing groups after the murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, aimed at the anti-fascist antifa movement as a “terrorist organization”.
In a post on his social social platform, Trump said he was designating the movement as a “big terrorist organization”.
“I will also strongly recommend that this financing is thoroughly investigated Antifa in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices,” Trump wrote.
It remains unclear what legal weight the designation bears.
Antifa, shortly for “anti-fascists”, is a loosely organized ideological movement without a clear leadership structure or hierarchy, say experts.
Within a few hours Kirk’s death last week -Days before the suspect Tyler Robinson was taken into custody prominent right-wing figures in the US attributed the debt for the death of Kirk on political links, without evidence.
That included the US President himself, who posted a video on social media in which he accused the “radical links” of expressing rhetoric about people such as Kirk who was “directly responsible for the terrorism that we see in our country today”.
A day after the prosecutors of Utah have unveiled Formal charges against RobinsonNo evidence has emerged that the 22-year-old connects with an external group. There are also questions about his precise motives.
The White House prepares an executive order for political violence and hate speech, said a Trump administration that said before.
The American vice-president JD Vance repeatedly blamed what he called left-wing political radicalization for the murder of Kirk.
He said the White House worked hard to ensure that “financing networks for left -wing violence” were treated as terrorist organizations.
Critics say that Trump uses the murder of Kirk as a pretext to combat political opponents.
Trump initially drove the idea of such an indication for Antifa in 2020 in the midst of violent national protests after the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
At the time, legal experts said that such a step was missing a legal basis would be difficult to perform and ensure free speech, since following an ideology is not generally considered a criminal act.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
