The median prize for a yearling in the sixth session of the Keeneland September Jaarling sale, $ 150,000, has increased almost 40% compared to the same session last year.
Since that sixth session marked half the point of the sale of 12 sessions on 14 September, that number seems to be a strong indicator that the record -breaking success that we have seen on this year’s yearling sales goes beyond the interest at the highest level. We will see as Keeneland ends with a run of six session that started on 15 September.
Unbelievable, on Sunday the sale exceeded last year’s record – in just six sessions. During the first six sessions, the September -sale of 2025 from 2025 saw the gross turnover of $ 434,982,000 compared to the $ 428,097,000 in gross turnover during the 12 sessions that produced last year’s record figure.
“Book 3 is closed today on another high note, with packaged grounds and strong competition in the ring,” said Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy. “To exceed last year’s record-breaking gross with six sessions that still have to come and so much quality of quality that remains in the catalog-speaking volumes about the health of the market we have seen here.”
Depth in yearling interest is already displayed. Due to Sunday’s session, about 37% of the yearlings that will sell at an auction this year have been sold. That percentage suggests that the industry has reached figures that go beyond “top of the market”, and sessien numbers continue to register well before 2024.

Bloodstock -agent Justin Casse sees a strong question to successfully participate in horse races in September Keeneland. That interest is about session to session.
“I feel that Book 2 was as book 1 five years ago,” Casse said Saturday. “Now I don’t know if book 3 will be as book 2 five years ago, but it is almost as if book 1 was in a completely different stratosphere of what we have seen in the past.
“The other books have shifted for the value and all statistics for what horses bring. I mean, there is a real hunger, just want to see what awaits us for book 3, 4 and 5, because you have another buyer base that comes to the city and leave the city and the family trees are much different.”
Looking at bloodhorse figures for the past few years, I would expect that around 2,200 yearlings will sell in Keeneland 15-20 September, which will take us to about three-quarters of the yearlings that will be sold in North America this year. The record of more than $ 636.7 million paid for yearlings on North -American auctions will be crushed in 2024 and can be surpassed in Tuesday or Wednesday this week.
The North -American record will fall and we will keep an eye on how well these later sessions and extra sales will perform. Furthermore, regional markets must also be investigated.
State of the market
As far as Kentucky is concerned, the momentum continues. Early in the sale of September September, Mark Taylor from Taylor noted that a sales agency noted that a successful Keeneland September often brings the industry into a strong cycle. With his third record sales in four years, that cycle seems to be becoming strength.
“Keeneland is the epicenter of the company,” said Taylor. “This sale is so important for breeders. If they are doing well here, they reinvest in Keeneland November, and then the entire ecosystem is doing well. This sale has been fantastic.”
A number of factors must be investigated to determine what this interest stimulates, but three that stand out, are the success of the dedication of Kentucky to wallets through funds of historical horse races, the industry that successfully lobbying to make 100% bonus depreciation permanent, and general improvement and safety car.
There is a basis that is crucial for a market that takes place for years.
