An animal rights activist has accused a woman police officer and her husband of animal cruelty, sometimes resulting in the death of dogs, at a police residential complex in Chennai. The activist alleged that the duo had killed adult dogs and puppies at G3 Kilpauk police quarters. He claimed that police took no action despite video evidence being submitted.
Sai Vignesh, director of the Almighty Animal Care Trust, said adult dogs and puppies were severely abused and some were even killed. According to Vignesh, the alleged abuse took place repeatedly within the building.
Vignesh filed a formal complaint with Police Station Inspector G3 Kilpauk, naming Constable Sheeba and her husband as suspects.
The complaint reportedly included CCTV footage documenting multiple acts described as cruelty to the animals. Vignesh provided specific details about the actions in his submission.
Vignesh said, “I have filed a complaint with CCTV footage showing the couple’s cruelty on multiple occasions. Footage shows the man beating a female dog to death with an iron bar, throwing a puppy into a drain and suffocating several puppies in a bag.”
The activist emphasized that despite filing CCTV, no First Information Report (FIR) had been filed at the time of his statement.
He expressed concern over the delay in police action, especially given the involvement of a police officer among the suspects.
Vignesh said, “This delay raises serious concerns, especially as one of the suspects is a police officer on duty, which poses the risk of evidence tampering and witness intimidation. This is a clear violation of BNS 325 and several provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.”
The activist referred to relevant legal provisions, including Section 325 (committing mischief by killing, poisoning, mutilating or rendering useless of animals) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, as grounds for immediate police action.
He noted that the delay in filing an FIR could potentially hamper the investigation and accountability process.
At the time of reporting, there were no statements from police authorities on the allegations or the status of any investigation into the complaints.
The case has attracted the attention of animal welfare groups and is expected to be watched for further developments as activists call for swift and impartial action.
So far, the police have not released any official statement on the case. Vignesh emphasized that responsibility within the force is crucial.
“When those charged with enforcing the law themselves engage in such acts, it undermines public confidence and the entire justice system,” he said.
