Devin Williams Takes Shot at Yankees Fans as He Signs $51 Million Mets Contract: ‘Sure Are Angry’

Devin Williams seemingly takes a parting shot at Yankees fans.

The former Yankee and newest Mets reliever — whose three-year, $51 million contract in Queens was made official Wednesday — took to his Instagram Story to share a message that appeared to be addressed to The Bronx faithful.

‘For a group of people who didn’t want me back on your team, [y’all] sure are angry in the [DMs],” Williams wrote with a crying laughing emoji on his account.

Williams joined the Yankees in a trade with the Brewers with high expectations as a two-time National League Reliever of the Year, but he came out of the gate with a 9.00 ERA in his first twelve appearances. He was initially removed from the closer role in late April, and although he received save opportunities over the summer, it was David Bednar who primarily received ninth-inning opportunities over time.

Williams still finished the year with strong upside — his whiff rate was in the 99th percentile — but his back-of-the-baseball-card numbers weren’t as gaudy as usual, and his ERA was a career-worst 4.79.

“I think in general [my season] was pretty good, to be honest,” Williams said at the end of the season. “In the end, I think it was in line with what I’ve done in the past, apart from a few blown games. I feel like I contributed.”

He now joins the back end of the Mets bullpen in a yet-to-be-determined role, as it remains to be seen whether they will re-sign closer Edwin Díaz or bring in a new reliever to support the late innings.
