Today it was Announced by NJ.com’s Ryan Novozinsky that he was not claimed. He will be assigned to AHL Utica.
DAWS is 22-23-1 axis at the NHL level with a 2.98 goals against average (GAA) and .898 savings percentage (SV%). His overall time in the organization has been peculiar. Sometimes he has shown flashes of complete sparkle, including his name in franchise history with a dominant version for 70,328 fans in the Stadium series 2024. He has struggled enormously at other times.
His 2024-25 season was a microcosm of his last seasons, which led to the question: who is really Nico Daws? He had a terrible time in 34 AHL matches last season and won only 11 of 34 with a 3.16 GAA EN .893 SV%. But in a short period in the NHL he went 3-1-0 with a remarkable 1.60 GAA EN .939 SV%.
Small sample size, certainly, but those NHL results put him second of the 81 goalkeepers to play 5+ matches with +1.12 goals that are saved above per 60 minutes (via Via via Sink). That stood for some of the best little ones of the game: Anthony Stolarz (+0.78), Connor Hellebuyck (+0.64), Logan Thompson (+0.62) and Andrei Vasilevsky (+0.47), to name just a few.
With Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen who form a very solid tandem for New Jersey, there was no room for Daws on the NHL schedule. Because he was no longer exempt from exemptions, the Devils did not remember much of a choice. So it is a huge sigh of relief that he was unclaimed – somewhat surprising – and can stay in the organization.
However, they are not whole From the forest. If the Devils have to call DAWS in the case of an injury, he can no longer stay in the NHL then what comes first – 10 games or 30 days – without having to need distance statements to be sent back.
