India lost the first Test against South Africa in humiliating fashion after they failed to chase down just 124 runs target in the final innings of the match. There was no need for the Indians to rush as there were almost 250 overs left in the match. Despite this, the entire batting line-up collapsed like a house of cards.
Washington Sundar was spotted in tears after being left devastated by the defeat to South Africa
No one would have thought that two-time WTC finalists India would have lost while chasing a modest target of 124 on their own home ground. Clearly, the Eden Gardens had nothing to offer the batters, but still the loss proved devastating for India.

When the Indian top order collapsed on another occasion, Washington promoted Sundar, the all-rounder, to number one. 3 for India, held his nerve to give India some resistance against the Indians. The batsman was out when the 6th wicket fell for India.
India still had hope from Axar Patel’s brief cameo, but when he was dismissed and Mohammed Siraj fell the next ball, Sundar could not hold back his tears as they burst in an expression of extreme sadness.

India slumped low after a Test loss to South Africa
South African skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first; they could score only 159 runs in the innings with Jasprit Bumrah being the best player on display for India. In return, India took a lead of just 30 runs as KL Rahul remained the choice of the batters.
Washington Sundar, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja all got some convincing starts but could not get past the half-century mark. The first half-century of the entire match came from Temba Bavuma as he scored an unbeaten 55* in the second innings.
The Indian batting order, without the service of their captain, Shubman Gill, could not get past the score of 100 and subsequently lost the match by a margin of 30 runs.
Simon Harmer was named Player of the Match
South Africa, unlike India, had only two spinners in the Protea side, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer. Apart from these two, even Aiden Markram bowled as their third spinner.
Simon Harmer was the bowlers’ choice for the Proteas as he dismissed 8 batters of the 18 wickets that fell in the two Indian innings, with their captain coming off injured on both occasions.
Harmer’s stunning effort with the ball proved effective as he was named Player of the Match for restricting the home side to such low scores in both innings.
