Demetrious Johnson recently previewed Umar Nurmagomedov’s upcoming fight. Nurmagomedov will take on Deiveson Figueiredo in the prelims of UFC 324.
Both fighters have their eyes on bantamweight gold. If Umar wins, he will next look to face two-time and current champion Petr Yan, with Figueiredo also chasing a rematch against ‘No Mercy’.
The former two-time UFC flyweight queen has won 4 of 6 fights after moving up to bantamweight. Umar, on the other hand, has only suffered one loss in his MMA career, which was against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311. Umar also broke his hand during the aforementioned fight. After his recovery, he made his comeback at UFC 321 opposite Mario Bautista and scored a dominant unanimous decision victory.
Demetrious Johnson picks Umar Nurmagomedov over Deivison Figueiredo
‘Mighty Mouse’ believes the fight between Umar Nurmagomedov and Deivison Figueiredo will be a tough affair, and Umar will take down ‘Deus da Guerra’ and take control of him. On the Jaxxon podcast, Johnson said:
“So the fight between Umar and Figgy comes down to wrestling. Umar is going to take him down, it has to be a fighting exchange. Figgy is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu… If I have to pick one, I’ll pick Umar Nurmagomedov.”
Johnson then emphasized that many Dagestani fighters overtrain, which is one of the main reasons why they often get tired on combat night. ‘Mighty Mouse’ added:
“Those guys train so hard… The only reason those guys lose is because they accelerate from overtraining.”

While Dagestani fighters like Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and even Usman Nurmagomedov have shown elite endurance, others like Umar Nurmagomedov and Said Nurmagomedov have shown notable struggles in the same department at times.
In Umar’s UFC 311 title fight against Merab Dvalishvili, the former succumbed to Dvalishvili’s relentless pressure and ran out of gas in the championship rounds.
Said Nurmagomedov has done that too showed similar trends in his previous two fights, both of which were losses.
