Delhi’s big EV push amid pollution: Motorcyclists likely to get Rs 40,000 subsidy

With the drafting of a new electric vehicle (EV) policy around the corner in New Delhi, India Today has learned that the Rekha Gupta government is planning major relief for the middle class by offering substantial subsidies for vehicles switching to electric mobility.

Under the draft EV policy, those who switch a two-wheeler from petrol to an electric vehicle can get a subsidy of Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000, government sources told India Today TV.

Commercial three-wheelers will also receive heavy subsidies if they switch to electric vehicles. Moreover, petrol or diesel vehicles priced up to Rs 20 lakh will be eligible for subsidies if they are converted into electric vehicles, sources said.

According to government sources in Delhi, the draft of the new policy is likely to be released in the first week of January.

The developments come as Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently chaired a meeting on pollution, which has now concluded.

“Today the Chief Minister has sought responses from departments ranging from PWD to Transport, DPCC, Environment and all others to discuss various aspects of pollution in Delhi… Many new things have come to light. Another meeting will be held on Thursday. Meaningful work will be done in the coming days,” Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said.

The issue of traffic congestion was discussed at length and consultations were held with various departments to ensure that traffic congestion does not worsen at major hotspots in the city.

Sources said that during the meeting, the Chief Minister also discussed the possibility of taxi aggregator companies Ola and Uber operating their private buses in the Delhi-NCR region.

As most commuters currently use taxis or private vehicles to reach offices, the government is exploring this option to reduce traffic congestion and pollution caused by it.

The meeting also emphasized on stricter enforcement of pollution norms. According to sources, the government wants a challan of Rs 10,000 to be imposed on people without a valid PUC certificate.

While such challans are often reduced to Rs 100 through Lok Adalats, the government is now aiming to ensure greater compliance by imposing the higher penalty.
