Dawn Staley is said to have taken over the Knicks coaching track, but believes she sabotaged her interview by asking all those damn questions. “
“I shot myself in the foot by being curious,” said the legendary coach of the lady team of the South Carolina on the podcast, “Postal movements. “
Staley, 55, was one of the various candidates to sit with Knicks buyer about the vacancy this summer and tried to become the first woman to serve as the head coach of an NBA team.
“I thought I was doing reasonably well,” she said, applauding her preparation while she explained, “if the knicks had offered me the job, I should have done it.”
Staley, however, said that she unconsciously convinced the Knicks that hiring a woman would bring distractions.
“My other question was:” How, if you hire me as the first female coach in the NBA, how would this influence your daily job? ” Because it would do. “Because you are asked that you would not be asked if you hired a male coach. There will be the media and all these things you are dealing with what you were not dealing with or that you are not dealing when you hire a man.
“And that made them think. That really made them think,” s – t, maybe she’s right. ” And then I felt the energy change.
The Knicks interviewed at least four male candidates to replace Tom Thibodeau before hiring Mike Brown, an almost 30-year-old veteran from NBA-Zijlijn. They also received permission to interview several potential candidates who are current NBA head coaches, in particular their top choice, Jason Kidd van de Mavericks.
Staley also revealed that the Knicks gave priority to a synergy between the coach and the staff during her interview, so that she was asked: “Did you ever have the New York Knicks organization in its history what you are looking for?”
“They wanted a team. They wanted inclusiveness with management and the coaches,” said Staley. “They wanted to feel like a team, a well -knitted franchise. And their answer was really:” No. ” But if you hire anyone else, how are you going to get that? “
Staley also interviewed with the Trail Blazers in 2021 for a vacancy for head coaching that was eventually filled by Chauncey Billups.
It is unclear whether Staley would have accepted an offer from Portland, but she is now on the record about the Knicks.
“I interviewed the Knicks. I did. It was the same interview that everyone who was in the candidate – Pool – I went inside. I thought I was doing reasonably well,” Staley said. “I thought I was well prepared for the interview. If the Knicks had offered me the job, I should do it. Not just for me. It’s for women. To open that. Because it’s the New York Knicks. And I am out of Philly. But it is the New York Knicks freak. And I said that in the interview.”
At least in Staley’s spirit it is partly because she planted a seed about the distraction of hiring a woman.
“Would I take an NBA job? No,” said Staley. “But I will say this, the NBA must be ready for a female head coach. You can’t just interview someone and say,” We’re going to hire her. ” “
