He said it was a “difficult” decision with Controrto, but it came down to wanting Smith’s bat from the bank.

“Seen where (Max) Muncy and Tommy (Edman) are physical, to have the extra infielder and then also to have Will Smith’s availability of the bank, and that is a bit of how we got it,” said Roberts. “You actually think you will take Will Smith’s bat from the bank or Michael’s.”

As far as Banda is concerned, Roberts also called it a “very, very difficult decision”, but said it had to do with the Reds -Matchups and LA with more options in the bullpen in the short series.

“I think having the length of some starters, and this is just a right hand heavy team,” said Roberts.

Roberts said that Smith is a feasible option to squeeze hit, but may also start in the game 2 of Wednesday.

“Save, throwing, he feels really good. So I think it’s a daily thing,” said Roberts. “So I don’t close the door that he doesn’t start tomorrow.”
