Novak Djokovic confirmed his dominance about the American Taylor Fritz with a 6-3 7-5 3-6 6-4 victory on Tuesday to set up a US Open semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz, in which the victory was celebrated with a dance dedicated to his daughter on her birthday.
The 38-year-old arrived at Arthur Ashe Stadium that Fritz had defeated in all 10 of their earlier meetings, but had to fight hard to move the second place of last year and stay on track for a record 25th big title.
“It was an incredibly narrow game. It was really everyone’s game. I thought I was lucky to really save crucial breaking points in the second set,” said Djokovic.
“For the most part of the second and third set, he was the better player. Few points decide the winner in these kinds of competitions. Fortunately it came by my side, especially at the end of the fourth set.”
After a strong start, Djokovic came under intense pressure in the ninth match of the game and saved five breakpoints to close the opening set on Sers for a stunning Crosscourt winner of Deep Secarted a tight hold in the next set.
Fourth Seed Fritz, the last American man who had left in the draw, eventually broke at his 11th attempt, but did not succeed in making the best of it and soon found two sets.
The American showed a great determination to win the third set with improved portion, but that was it for the comeback.
Djokovic stuck to love for a 5-4 lead in the fourth set and wasted two match points in the next match before he closed it thanks to a double error from Fritz, making the position of the US Open 16-0 against Americans.
“That last game was nerve -racking, to be honest, a difficult thing for Taylor to end with a double mistake. He didn’t earn that, but great fight and great tournament for him,” said the Serbian.
“I didn’t feel that I dominated from the field. In many of my service games I just tried to stay alive and fight for every ball … I am proud of the fight I did. I am wearing my heart on my sleeve for this sport, I still enjoy it.”
Djokovic, who is looking for his fifth title at Flushing Meadows, celebrated the victory with a dance for his daughter Tara.
“The dance eventually she will judge me tomorrow how good the dance was,” said Djokovic.
“She told me how to dance. It is K-pop demon hunters … Soda Pop is the name of the song. It is clear that it is a big thing for teenagers and for children worldwide, but I never knew about it before.
“My daughter told me about it a few months ago. So we are at home to do choreography and this is one of them. Hopefully I let her smile when she wakes up tomorrow morning.”
