October 17 – The president of Cypriot second division football club Karmiotissa, Stavros Demosthenos (pictured), was shot dead in Limassol on Friday morning, local police said.
According to preliminary information, an armed man on a motorcycle opened fire on 49-year-old Demosthenous’ car in front of his home, and he died while his son was taking him to the hospital.
Karmiotissa played in the First Division last season, but was relegated to the Second Division. Since its founding in 1979, the team has played mainly in Cyprus’ lower football divisions.
Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that the perpetrator is wanted and investigators are trying to piece together the timeline of the attack using CCTV footage and witness statements.
At the same time, the Cypriot Football Association (CFA) confirmed the news and said that all Karmiotissa matches have been postponed until next Sunday.
“Due to today’s tragic events regarding the president of Karmiotissa Polemidion, Stavros Demosthenous, the CFA (Cyprus Football Association) has decided to postpone all matches of the Karmiotissa team in the men’s, youth and children’s championships scheduled from today until next Sunday.
“The President, the members of the Board of Directors, the General Manager and the staff of the CFA extend their sincere condolences to Karmiotissa and the family members of the deceased,” the CFA statement said.
