The ultimatum was issued hours after Najmul made comments that sparked widespread outrage within the cricket community. He had stated that only players would suffer financial losses if participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was affected, adding that the BCB would not compensate cricketers for any loss of income.
CWAB President Mohammad Mithun announced the decision late on Wednesday evening during an emergency online press conference, describing Najmul’s comments as demeaning and unacceptable.
“The words used by the board director about the players are completely unacceptable to the players. It has deeply hurt the entire group of cricketers,” Mithun told Cricbuzz.
Mithun also expressed frustration over long-standing unresolved issues, including concerns over domestic cricket structures. He stated that the association had repeatedly shown patience but had not seen meaningful progress.
“We have even given the board a lot of time in the First Division, and still we have not seen any positive outcome. And the words used by this board director repeatedly have deeply hurt the entire cricket community, and the players are in no way ready to accept this,” he added.
In a strong warning, Mithun stated that the players were ready to take collective action if their demands were not met.
“So if he does not resign before tomorrow’s match, we will announce a boycott of all cricket activities from tomorrow,” he said.
Anticipating the growing unrest, the BCB released a formal statement earlier on Wednesday expressing regret over Najmul’s comments. The board said it “expressed sincere regret for comments that could be considered inappropriate, offensive or hurtful.”
The BCB clarified that the comments did not represent the official position of the board, noting that they “should not be interpreted as representing the views or policies of the board.” The statement further reaffirmed the board’s commitment to the players and emphasized that “players remain at the core of cricket in Bangladesh.”
The board also promised that “appropriate disciplinary action” would be taken against behavior that disrespects cricketers as tensions continue to escalate ahead of the next BPL match.
