Cunha is still adjusting to life at Man Utd after a turbulent start – Soccer News

Matheus Cunha has revealed that Manchester United’s turbulent start to the 2025/26 season makes him feel like he has been at the club much longer.

Cunha joined Old Trafford from Wolves last summer for a transfer fee of £62.5million after a stellar season in the Premier League last season.

In 2024–25, Cunha made 33 top-flight appearances and finished the league campaign with a team-high 15 goals. He also registered six assists, the second most in the Wolves ranks.

The Brazil international created 57 chances last season, more than any of his teammates, and had 110 shots (44 on target), more than any United player during the 2024/25 campaign.

However, he has yet to get his career off the ground under Ruben Amorim.

Among strikers in the Premier League in 2025/26, Cunha has attempted the most shots (15) without scoring in the league, while also failing to register an assist.

“To be here now in the national team and at United is without a doubt another level and another moment for me as a player,” Cunha told Globo Esporte.

“I try to adapt and learn as much as possible.

“It’s only been two months [since joining Manchester United]but it feels like I’ve been here for a long time because of the current situation of the club.

“I have to get results as quickly as possible, because I am one [big] signature. All this helps a lot to find the adjustment faster and to feel as good as possible in the national team.”

However, Cunha revealed that he was used to playing as a midfielder before coming across the 4-3-3 formation when he started his professional career.

“I came to the national team with this stereotype of a number 9 shirt,” Cunha added.

“I play all my basics as a midfielder and when I turned professional I came into contact with the world of 4-3-3. You have to adapt: play centre-forward, winger or ‘eight’.

“They have eliminated the midfielder position, and you have to adapt.

“But I see it positively, because it has given me experience and many more positions, and even more in short-term tournaments with the national team.

“Having a versatile player is a huge help for any coach.”

Cunha played an impressive role in Brazil’s 5-0 win over South Korea earlier this week, registering an assist on Vinicius Junior’s 77th minute goal and also creating the most chances (three, tied with Vinicius) at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

United return to the Premier League on Sunday when they take on arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
