CroCombe joins Millwall with free transfer

Goalkeeper, Max Crocombe has joined Millwall with a free transfer from Burton Albion.

CroCombe spent the last two seasons in Burton, where he held 21 clean sheets in 92 performances, but now that the club has left a free transfer to replace Liam Roberts that Millwall left earlier in June to join Mansfield after a single season.

“I am happy that we were able to sign Max,” said Steve Gallen, director of Millwall, football. “Max played a major role in holding Burton Albion last year and they really wanted to keep him.

“Max is the number one of New Zealand and they have already booked their place on the FIFA World Cup 2026. We hope that he will make our goalkeeper department more competitive.”

Burton’s head of the keepers, Jake Kean is ‘pleased’ that CroCombe has earned his chance to move to a championship club, his professionalism and performances has been despite the struggles of the brewers on the field.

“In the past two seasons, he has been brilliant and played a major role in holding the club in League One.

“He earns this step to the championship, not only based on his performances, but also his professionalism. He is always first in and last – striving for that one percent more that not only makes himself better, but also the team.

“It was a privilege to work with someone who is so dedicated. I know he will take on this opportunity with both hands and a large part of the team will be in Millwall while he was here.

“I wish him nothing but the best for next season and for the World Cup in 2026, where he will undoubtedly prevent.”

Burton’s sports director, Richard Dorman, added that he is proud that the New -Zeelandse International is an example of what the club wants to achieve in terms of player development.

“We want players to grow, develop and show their talent. Everyone at Albion is proud to have played a role in Max’s journey. He gave everything to us during his time, and we wish him the very best for the future.”

Crocombe started his career in Buckingham Town, where he led one goal in 33 performances before he made a successful move to Oxford United, where he made six performances in the midst of Loans in Banbury, Nuneaton, Barnet and Southport.

A stint at Carlisle United before he dropped to National League North and won successive promotions with Salford, only to move to Australia in the summer of 2019 to play for Brisbane Roar and Melbourne winning about a two-year Stint Down below.

July 2021 saw the now 31-year-old return to England in Grimsby when he helped the Mariners promote National League to League Two via Play-Offs, before they went on a memorable run to the FA Cup quarterfinals in 2022-23 campaign that ended in Brighton.

CroCombe spent the last two seasons with Burton when the Brewers ended 20th in both campaigns after flirting with the relegation zone.

At the international level, CroCombe represents New Zealand, where he is their first-choice keeper with 17 senior caps, and was an always present part of their run to qualifying for 2026 FIFA World Cup.
