Manchester United are preparing to ‘finalize’ a deal to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo as the 40-year-old striker pushes for a return to European football, according to an almost unbelievable report from Spain.
Old Trafford 3.0?
Ronaldo left Old Trafford at the end of 2022 to seal a free transfer to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League after an explosive row with then manager Erik ten Hag.
Last year the Portugal international, his country’s all-time top scorer and record scorer, had returned to the Red Devils from Juventus for his second spell at the Mancunian club in a deal that stunned the Premier League but ultimately ended in disaster.
Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia made him the highest paid athlete in the world, dwarfing his closest competitor – NBA superstar Stephen “Steph” Curry. In a lower quality league, the aging striker’s scoring prowess has not diminished, with 111 goals in 127 appearances for Al-Nassr.
Cristiano Ronaldo – Career record
| Club | Competitions | Goals | Active for years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sporty CP | 31 | 5 | 2002-2003 |
| Man united | 292 | 118 | 2003-2009 |
| Real Madrid | 438 | 450 | 2009-2018 |
| Juventus | 134 | 101 | 2018-2021 |
| Man united | 54 | 27 | 2021-2022 |
| Al Nassr | 127 | 111 | 2022- |
| Portugal | 226 | 143 | 2003- |
However, in an explosive twist, Transfers claims Ronaldo is now actively pushing for a third spell at the Theater of Dreams, with INEOS having opened talks to complete the deal.
Conversations underway
The Spanish newspaper states that “discussions are ongoing” between both parties, with Ronaldo willing to “accept” a hugefinancial sacrifice” to facilitate the deal.
The Portuguese’s contract in Riyadh contains a “€50 million release clause” – a significant fee, although one that must be weighed against the significant commercial revenue the transfer would generate.
The report reveals that Ronaldo is planning a “end [to] his glorious career at the Theater of Dreams” while “secret negotiations” are underway to complete his return.
Old Trafford executives are said to see the 40-year-old’s experience as a crucial factor in their decision, with the firm belief that his reintroduction will “serve as a catalyst for a winning mentality among the young talents currently in the first team.”
Final Thoughts: An “incredible” deal
United re-signing Ronaldo is an incredible prospect, in the most literal sense: it is not credible.
Transfers has a sketchy reputation for blockbuster updates that don’t always materialize. And while Ronaldo has close ties with the Spanish capital, given his performances at Real Madrid, this is a deal that doesn’t make sense for either party.
INEOS has just decided to let go of an old ex-Madrid star on high wages; the idea that they would then go one step further to bring another player back to Old Trafford – however legendary their status in football – only exists in the Transfers’ news room.
