Connor McDavid returns against Ducks with a chip on his shoulder after Olympic silver

Connor McDavid is back – and not a moment too soon for the Edmonton Oilers.

After helping Canada win the silver medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, McDavid attended the team’s morning skate in Anaheim and after the session announced he would be in the lineup against the Ducks on Wednesday night in Anaheim. It will be his first action since the break at the Winter Games, where he led the tournament with 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) and also set a record for most points in a single Olympic tournament among NHL players.

McDavid could have taken more time. No one would have questioned it.

But he takes no time.

“It will be an exciting race and it will be a sprint,” McDavid said after the morning skate. “There are only a handful of weeks left and we haven’t secured anything yet.”

That statement alone tells you everything you need to know.

No longer break – just business

For most players, a grueling Olympic tournament followed by an emotional rollercoaster of losing a gold medal can be enough to catch their breath. The Canadians lost to the Americans in the gold medal match, but McDavid was honest about his feelings.

Connor McDavid shoots Oilers

‘I thought we did enough to win’ he said. “Their goalkeeper made some big, big saves and I thought we missed some chances as well. Obviously disappointed, there’s no way around it, no way to mitigate it. It sucks.”

McDavid also captained the Canadian team in both the semi-final win over Finland and the gold medal game against the Americans, with Crosby unavailable due to injury.

He gave everything he had during that tournament and won the MVP award and the best forward award.

And now he’s in the Oilers lineup without hesitation.

That’s important.

What his return means for Edmonton

The Oilers (28-22-8) enter the final stretch with 24 games remaining and sit second in the Pacific Division. The Oilers have struggled with inconsistency all year, but now that their captain is back it puts everything into perspective.

How McDavid’s return affects the team:

  • Pace of Play: The Oilers are most effective when the game is a north-south contest. There is no player in the NHL who can change the pace of a game like McDavid.
  • Power play success: While the Oilers’ power play is already elite, it becomes deadly when McDavid is on the ice.
  • Intangibles: When your captain has the option to take a break but chooses to get right back to work, it says a lot about the character in the room.

The Oilers open a California swing against Anaheim before heading to Los Angeles and San Jose. These are the games they need. Picking up points against lower-level Pacific opponents is a non-negotiable if Edmonton wants to secure home ice or avoid a wild-card battle.

McDavid understands that.

Fuel the silver medal

There is a difference between satisfaction and motivation.

From a statistical perspective, McDavid owned the Olympic competition, but silver is not gold, and athletes like McDavid can’t compartmentalize disappointment so easily. The pain of defeat still stings. The what-if questions linger.

Sometimes that pain becomes motivation.

We’ve witnessed McDavid bounce back from playoff series losses with incredible regular seasons. We have seen him rise to the challenge after being called. If the Olympic gold medal game left a small dent in his ego, the rest of the NHL better pay attention.

This move only confirms what has been clear in Edmonton for years: McDavid is not motivated by personal achievement. Records, awards and international honors mean little compared to the urge for unfinished business.

With 24 games remaining, the Oilers are on the cusp of entering sprint mode, and their leader is ready to charge ahead.

Wednesday night in Anaheim is more than just a regular season game.

It’s the beginning of the pressure.
