Environmental groups have expressed their concern about the impact that a proposed gold mine will have in WA’s large southern people on the black cockatoo populations of Carnaby.
The Ausgold mining site is approximately 36 kilometers from the city of Katanning.
The proposal includes cleaning up 50 hectares of indigenous vegetation that contains 82 trees with cavities – which may affect the breeding, scheduling and foraging the endangered species that are only found in West -Australia.
In the entry of the company to the Federal Ministry of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Ausgold said the offset options investigated, but she still had to complete.

The options include revetation of forests in the district and the Kaketoe -Furaging Habitat, as well as the addition of around 100 cockatubes artificial nest boxes.
Dean Arthurell of the Crusaders of the Carnaby said that the loss of the trees would have a significant impact.
“Offsets simply facilitate more clearance and destruction,” he said.
“It can take 200 years before a tree forms a cavity to house these guys.“
Limited habitat
Arthurell said that wider effects of the project also worryed with the nearby Woorgabup Nature Reserve, one of the three important habitats for the birds in the Katanning Shire.
“The impact on the population, they will certainly decrease, and it is not only due to the [clearing] Proposal but the effects of light pollution, noise pollution, dust, widening of roads and cleaning up old trees that we may see disappear from these areas for good from these areas, “he said.
“We have to look at that remaining habitat, which is absolutely miniscule for these birds,”
he said.

Ausgold executive chairman John Dorward said that strict environmental controls were being carried out at a state and federal level.
“The permit around the environmentalfront is very rigorous and we have designed the project to minimize our impact as much as possible, so let’s leave large areas of standing Eucalyptus Woodland intact,” he said.
“We do not want more impact than to put this project into production.“
Do the balance
The mine is expected to employ around 250 people during construction and 350 full -time staff in production.
Shire van Katanning -President Kristy d’Atinthe said the council had worked to ensure that the local community could get the most out of the opportunities that the project offers.
“It will actually exceed the limit of two other councils, so it will offer a considerable economic activity and opportunities for our great southern,”
she said.
“We have a very active LCDC [Land Care District Committee] That works with Ausgold to ensure that they protect our environment as well as possible. ”

Mr Dorward said that the mine was expected to produce about 1.14 million our gold during the life of the mine, based on the drilling until now.
“At the moment we will produce 10 years, but I think it will go much longer,”
he said.
“We produce around 140,000 our gold per year, which is a considerable amount of production, and that will enable us to continue to invest in order to continue to expand that my life.”
Mr Dorward said they wanted the first gold stream until the end of 2027.
Ausgold still has to submit an entry to WA’s Environmental Protection Authority.
