What the hell goes with Terence Atmane in Cincinnati?!?!
It has been one of the most unlikely runs in the recent ATP tour history, because the world no. 136 has actually not been released anywhere to reach the semi -final of a Masters 1000 event. Atmane had to be clearly eligible to get into the main drawing, and since then he has eliminated Yoshihito Nishioka, Flavio Cobolli, Joao Fonseca, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune.
The 23-year-old went to the Western & Southern Open with five wins in the career at ATP level. He has now doubled that number to 10. For his efforts, Atmane will climb to at least 69th in the ranking. If he wins another competition, he will break into the top 50.
Being in Atmane’s way of not only that achievement, but also what would be an absolutely shocking place in the final, is none other than Jannik Sinner of World No. 1. It is not surprising that on Saturday the very first meeting between two players who are the same age, but whose paths on the Pro Tour can hardly be different.
Sinner has already collected four large titles and he is one point away from opening the US Open with a shot on the calendar year Grand Slam (lost the French Open Final of Triple Championship against Carlos Alcaraz). After he skipped the Toronto Masters after his Wimbledon triumph, the Italian is well equipped to load back-to-back in Cincinnati. Sinner’s title defense So far includes Straight set victories on Daniel Elahi Galan, Gabriel Diallo, Adrian Mannarino and Felix Auger-Aliassy.
The top seeds looked somewhat vulnerable while he went to Tiebreakers against Diallo and Mannarino, but he picked up the pace to destroy Auger-Aliassy 6-0, 6-2 on Thursday.
Atmane clearly took Cobolli, Fonseca, Fritz and Rune surprised. Sinner is not going to make that mistake, and which secrets “the magician” had kept “are now very open.
