World number one Jannik Sinner reached the Cincinnati open quarterfinals with a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) victory over a stubborn Adrian Mannarino.
Sinner quickly took control of the match when he broke 37-year-old Frenchman in the third game.
Mannarino, in 89th place in the world, saved a breaking point in the seventh game with an ace, but the left -handed person could not stop his opponent to claim the first set.
The game was suspended for rain with Sinner 40-30 on serve and 2-1 down in the second set, before the players resume about two hours and 45 minutes later.
Mannarino turned out to be a more obdurate competitor in the second set, but despite saving three breaking points at 5-5, eventually succumbed to the fourth when he delivered a backhand to go 6-5.
Sinner was 30-0 up when he served before the game, but some inspired tennis earned his first breaking point that he took with a stunning Forehand-Terugkeer.
Sinner, however, produced back-to-back aces to win the Tie-Break 7-4 and to extend his record to four wins in so many games against Mannarino.
“He is a tough opponent,” said Sinner. “Very different from all other opponents. Not only because he is a left -wing, but also how he touches the ball – it’s very low.
“I have a little trouble closing it, but this can happen in this sport and I am very happy that I am in the next round.”
