I don’t work with Kate McKinnon or Jason Bateman, and there aren’t even any employees in our office who look like their characters from the over-the-top 2016 comedy. Christmas party at the office. That could actually be a good thing for our business, but I could use a little more of the actors’ form of entertainment most days. Nevertheless, tonight is my office’s Christmas party, where we’ll have a nice meal, have fun in a team-based trivia game, and certain people will be able to take home something fun thanks to our social committee’s silent auction. I doubt there will be any hostile takeovers, nor that anyone will be fired, so don’t expect me to be here tomorrow to talk about some epic moment. The doors open at 5:45 p.m., the party continues until midnight, and it is my responsibility to say thanks before the meal. This is something I wouldn’t normally do, but if the Vice President asks you personally, you’ll have to reassess. Long story short, I’m giving a short, concise talk on grace and gratitude that I hope will resonate with my colleagues. There are many people who are less fortunate right now than all the people who will be here tonight, so I hope to put into context how grateful we should be for having good jobs, good friends, great families and a good meal to share.
There will be a few hockey-themed prizes offered during that silent auction tonight. Speaking to a member of the social committee, there is a Mark Schiefele jersey up for grabs, and they also secured two tickets to the Jan. 8 game between the Jets and Edmonton Oilers. I’m not sure either of these awards will be celebrated as much as they should be with the way the Jets are floundering, but that’s just a footnote to the fun tonight.
The schedule will see a quiz-style team event where those gathered around the numbered tables will join forces and flex their gray matter in an attempt to win prizes too. I have no idea who I’ll be sitting with and there are no assigned seats or tables, so it should be interesting to see who sits with who. I suspect birds of a feather will flock together, but there are some smart people in all positions. This could be a brain battle tonight!
While I say all this, my focus won’t be on hockey tonight. The Jets are in Denver for a game against the Avalanche, the Moose host Rockford tomorrow, there’s another pile of snow falling right now that will continue to fall all evening, and I’ll probably have to shovel snow before I go to the party tonight. Or, if the drive home is treacherous, I’ll shovel snow tonight after the party when it’s quiet. The only guarantee? I’ll get the snow blower out.
Since it’s that time of year, if you attend a party, be responsible. Don’t drink or drive, make sure none of your co-workers do, and find alternative ways to get home if you indulge in adult beverages. If you’re clear-headed, you can always find your car the next day, and the last thing anyone or any family wants at this time of year is a tragedy. Be smart, be responsible and be home during the holidays so everyone can have a happy holiday!
I’m going to get ready for a party. Enjoy some hockey as you watch games tonight, and I’ll resume the puck banter tomorrow!
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
