Few athletes are more beloved in their country than Sidney Crosby in Canada. The Pittsburgh Penguins superstar has done it all while wearing the red and white, none bigger than his infamous Golden Goal to secure victory at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Now that they’ve accomplished just about everything you can imagine on the international stage, many are wondering what else Crosby has to offer.
He will of course be at the forefront of Team Canada at the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, but will that be the case for Captain Canada as well?
Crosby gave fans an answer on Tuesday:
“I hope it isn’t. But if it is, I hope I can make the most of this great opportunity. But who knows? I want to play as long as I can,” Crosby said.
The 38-year-old just entered the first season of the two-year, $17.4 million contract extension he signed with the Penguins in 2024, continuing to earn his patented $8.7 million average annual salary.
Crosby can play as long as he wants
As Crosby himself said, he wants to play as long as he can, and considering he’s still one of the best players in the game, there’s no telling how many years are left in his illustrious career.
Crosby has 21 points (12 goals, nine assists) in 19 games to start the 2025-26 season, and that’s without even appearing to have reached his highest level.
Some would say he’s turning back the clock, but this is what Crosby has done since the day he entered the NHL. The consistency and longevity now in year 21 is remarkable and on par with other all-time great athletes like LeBron James and Tom Brady.
At some point it will all come to an end, but he keeps going, and we should know by now never to count anything when it comes to Crosby.
