The Insider: All-Out Carroll Gardens Reno creates a home for generations to come
“This was the quintessential Brooklyn brownstone. It had many lives before my clients arrived,” says architect Michael Ingui, who oversaw a major renovation of the four-story building for a creative couple with two children. “They bought it several years ago knowing it needed a lot of work. It had been divided into rental properties and the goal was to do it the right way and create a home that would last for generations.”
Based in Manhattan Ingui architecturewith Alyssa Kargl as project manager, carried out the monumental task, resulting in an owner’s triplex on the two lower floors plus the basement, with two rental units above. One of the most important elements of the job: the restoration of the front and rear facades; new mechanicals, including central air; a new interior staircase in the owner’s apartment; all new baths and a custom kitchen; replacing the rear wall with glass at the living room and garden level; and new floors everywhere.
