Manchester United are keeping tabs on Christian Pulisic after AC Milan’s asking price sparked interest in the red-hot winger, according to the latest report from Italy.
The left has priority
United are prioritizing a new left winger this summer, with INEOS looking to maintain a 4-2-3-1 system following the departure of Ruben Amorim in January.
Michael Carrick has made a flying start to his second spell as interim coach, recording four wins as he put United’s bitter rivals – Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – to the sword.
The team and the atmosphere around Old Trafford have changed in the past month, with the players looking rejuvenated in a formation that maximizes their strengths rather than hindering them.
However, the team lacks a natural winger on the left, despite the resurgent performances of Patrick Dorgu prior to his hamstring injury and Matheus Cunha being able to play in that position.
However, the Brazil international is best deployed more centrally, with a growing sense that United need a player capable of hugging the touchline – in a similar way to Amad on the right – as Luke Shaw no longer offers the same overlapping threat as he used to.
The pursuit, albeit unsuccessful, of Antoine Semenyo over Christmas highlighted United’s focus on adding a left-sided forward, while the identification of RB Leipzig speedster Yan Diomande and Everton’s wizard Iliman Ndiaye as alternatives to the Ghanaian international reinforces the point.
Transfer market now adds a new name to the list of targets, with the Red Devils believed to be actively “monitoring” Pulisic ahead of a possible attack on the San Siro.
“Captain America”
The 27-year-old winger will be well known to United fans after a difficult spell at Chelsea, having joined Stamford Bridge from Borussia Dortmund for £57 million in January 2019.
The US international – who will play a crucial role in Mauricio Pochettino’s side at the World Cup this summer – has scored 47 goals and assists in 145 appearances for the Blues.
‘Captain America’ then came to Milan in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £19 million, with the Rossoneri deflect interest of Juventus and Galatasaray to strike a deal.
Pulisic has become one of Milan’s best players, with 67 goals in 120 games – almost twice his level in west London. ESPN considers this campaign the “best season” of his career.
Transfer market reveals that this excellent form has put Pulisic in the crosshairs of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and United – with the Italian heavyweight reluctantly open to a sale if a £48m bid comes in as they plan to “restructure their squad” this summer.
The report concludes that Premier League clubs are “ready to make an offer” to AC Milan to bring the American back to England.
Final thoughts
INEOS is increasingly prioritizing players with a Premier League background following the success of Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha this season. For example, the plan to overhaul the midfield revolves around capturing one of the division’s standout young options, be it Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba or Adam Wharton.
Therefore, it makes sense to target Pulisic as he has already experienced the shock of English football. However, it is important to note that he only regained the form he showed at Dortmund when he left for Italy.
Moreover, the Milan magician turns 29 next year and his game largely depends on his speed to leave the opposition full-backs for dead.
INEOS has shown an aversion to signing older players nearing the end of their careers, given how often United have been burned by this approach in the past.
