I have been saying this for a long time, but golf clubs for children has been a completely overlooked market.
Yes, there are options – American children are probably the most active in that space; Ping is doing great; Cobra, even Callaway and Taylormade have taken a fair crack – but in the end it is part of the market that a refresher course needs.
In the past, the options for children would be a cut version of the club of an adult (I learned). I had a cut Spalding Tour edition that my uncle received from the local PGA professional, and although it was great, it is clearly not ideal if you are 12. If you walk into a large box shop nowadays, there are junior sections, but they are usually buried in the back of the stores and for the most part there are no real “children” platforms to the market. That is where I would like to see things change. It is an untouched source of new golfers and just like something else, if you make it fun, the children will follow.
That brings us this week, where favorite vice-golf from Direct-to-Consumer has thrown his hat in the Kiddo Ring and I have to say-I think it’s great. It is fun with a baseline. Although I am not going to do a technological breakdown or benefits of Spiel here. To be honest for all participants in this category, they all do what is best for the Junior Golfer. The clubs are all designed to get the ball up, they are lighter, so that the player can take a hard tear, and all kits are aimed at children, which is the most important thing.

Point is, golf in an introductory phase for the children has to be fun because, well, Golf is difficult.

Vice even offers golf balls for children who are a lower compression and built for launch and feeling. Children will have fun if they can get it high and make it closer, so we don’t need an 8-year-old who is worried about North-Tot-Zuid-Dispersie. (Except Mine 8-year-old, whom I had demanded he became the number 1 player in the world by the time he is 18 because his old man is a hack and I live deputy by him.)
Regardless of what happens in my household, I can honestly say that after I received sets for both boys (ages 8 and 12), I love the make-up of the sets, the quality of the entire kit and the first session about the driving range was a smoking success. It was easy for them to understand the sets, which is great, but even more they liked how easy it was to get the ball in the air.
Both children have the golf bug, which means a justified game revival for myself. (It is a lot easier to sneak to the track on a Saturday if you take the children with you.) There is definitely a method for my madness.
“Dad, have you seen it?!”
I did it, friend, and it heats my heart.
