Chelsea ‘not good enough’ after Sunderland setback

Enzo Maresca has said Chelsea were ‘not good enough’ after his side lost at home to Sunderland.

Chemsdine Talbi scored a dramatic winner as Sunderland recorded a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge in the dying seconds.

Chelsea had taken the lead inside four minutes through Alejandro Garnacho’s goal, but conceded a soft equalizer to Wilson Isidor after failing to deal with a long throw-in in the penalty area.

The Blues could not find a route through organized Sunderland, who silenced the home crowd late on with a final goal.

The defeat is a major setback for Chelsea, who have won just two of their last six Premier League games. Maresca demanded full-time that the level of his team had to improve.

“I think we weren’t good enough, we lacked creativity, we didn’t create much, apart from the goal probably, and we struggled,” he said.

“We need our players to perform 100 percent. Even at 1-0 we lost some duels, we lost some second balls and we have to do better against this team.”

“When we get to certain parts of the pitch we cross because we expect there to be four or five players in the penalty area, but when we crossed today we had players in the penalty area but probably the quality of the cross wasn’t the best.

“We have scored a lot of goals from crosses, the last one I think was against Benfica at home when Garnacho forced an own goal. Today it was probably more about the quality of the cross than the players in the penalty area.”
