The former France international has been plagued by injuries since joining the Blues from Leicester City in a £70million move in 2022. He made just 29 appearances in the Premier League in the three seasons prior to this one, missing the entire 2023/2024 season due to a cruciate ligament injury.
Fofana is making progress after recovering from hamstring surgery earlier this year; he has started each of Chelsea’s last two league matches as they beat Spurs and Wolves while keeping a clean sheet.
“The best feeling is when you are on the pitch and you can help the team win games,” Fofana told Chelsea’s official website.
“Helping the team is the best feeling. I feel really good now. I’m working hard to stay fit, stay strong and keep helping the team win.”
Chelsea man Fofana praises Maresca after injury comeback
Maresca manages Fofana’s minutes carefully, something the defender appreciates as he works to become a regular starter for the team.
“In football it is difficult to take the time because there is a match every three days, but he [Maresca] protects me and he pushes me in a good way,” Fofana said.
“I have had hamstring surgery and you have to be careful when you come back. He is not taking any risks with me because he wants me to be able to play every three days, step by step.”
“The goal is to play every match; we have to get there carefully step by step. Moreover, he protects me because of the type of player I am: aggressive, fast, not afraid of duels on the field. I understand it, and that’s how I feel. I agree. The most important thing is to keep making progress.”
