Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira returns to the spotlight on Saturday night at UFC Rio, where he will face Poland’s Mateusz Gamrot in a high-stakes main event.

With potential title implications on the line, the matchup pits Oliveira’s world-class submission game against Gamrot’s relentless wrestling and pace in what promises to be an exciting battle for the Brazilian crowd.

Oliveira (35-11) looks to bounce back from a tough TKO loss to lightweight champion Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 in June. The former defending champion will now look to get back into contention with a statement-making win in the main event in front of his home crowd in Rio.

Gamrot (25-3) will come into action at short notice as a replacement for the injured Rafael Fiziev, taking advantage of a huge opportunity in Rio. After a victory over Ľudovít Klein in May, the Polish candidate hopes to strengthen his case for a title challenge with a victory over Oliveira.

Round 1 – Mateusz Gamrot made an unforgettable entrance at UFC Rio, sprinting to the octagon at full speed and nearly diving into the front row before the fight even started.

Once the action started, both fighters met in the middle, with Oliveira immediately executing his front kicks to keep Gamrot at bay. The former champion unleashed sharp combinations, forcing Gamrot to remain patient as he looked for an opening to shoot.

Finally, Gamrot secured the elimination he’d been waiting for, setting up a wild wrestling match. Oliveira threatened with an omoplata, briefly lost position, then adjusted and regained control, using the submission attempt to clamber on top.

Gamrot went to his knees, but Oliveira remained ruthless, switching to a back position and locking himself in like a backpack. The Polish contender managed to survive the round, but Oliveira’s jiu-jitsu had already set the tone.

Round 2 – Back in the center of the cage, Oliveira returned to his distance-controlling front kicks, while Gamrot began to find his rhythm and unleash his combinations, although few landed clear early.

Gamrot eventually connected with some solid shots, but the former champion responded with trademark aggression, inviting an exchange. Oliveira then shot for a takedown, nearly secured it and seamlessly transitioned to Gamrot’s back.

Moments later, ‘Do Bronx’ locked in the rear naked choke and forced the tap, capping off another signature finish before jumping into the crowd to celebrate.

Charles Oliveira again triumphed emphatically.
