Charles Oliveira opens up and gets honest about retirement plans ahead of the UFC Rio Matchup

Charles Oliveira has addressed some of the rumors that he is planning to hang up his MMA gloves. ‘Do Bronx’ addressed this topic ahead of his UFC Rio fight this weekend against Mateusz Gamrot after the originally scheduled Rafael Fiziev withdrew. Oliveira is approaching 50 professional MMA fights, and while he is still days away from turning 38 years old, riding off into the sunset is not in his focus.

Some also theorized that the former UFC lightweight champion may have been looking for a perfect swan song fight, as the Brazilian has a high-profile fight on home soil in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. Oliveira has a one hundred percent rate of securing wins when he is the party’s favorite, with seventeen wins spread over seventeen fighting in Brazil.

When discussing some of the rumors some have about the idea that he might give up in competitive mixed martial arts during an interview with Nice junkiesaid Oliveira,

“Retirement comes from you guys. I’ve never thought about it, but every time I do an interview…I don’t know if I’m putting up a bad fight or if you want me to retire! I’m not sure what happens because every interview brings up retirement. I’ve never thought about it, never thought about it.”

Charles Oliveira has an interesting fight in mind after UFC Rio

To further underline the idea that he has broader goals to continue competing, Charles Oliveira has mapped out an ideal fight for himself in 2026. The acclaimed submission artist is one of several MMA fighters throwing their names in the hat for the UFC White House card scheduled for June. Oliveira has called out a familiar name that has been on his mind for years, despite the fact that this fighter has not fought in years.

That fighter in question is Conor McGregor, and in media appearances for UFC Rio, Oliveira has been transparent in saying that his desire for this fight was tied to the confluence of it being on a huge card, but also the perceived big payday component that comes from a fight booking with ‘The Notorious’. It remains to be seen if Charles Oliveira secures that fight for 2026, but he is touching on the idea that he has more fights in him in the future.
