The Uninon government said that the moment Reuters and Reuters World were blocked on the X platform in India, it immediately wrote to ‘X’ to unblock them.
The Indian government has rejected the statement of the social media platform X that it ordered the blocking of more than 2,000 accounts, including International news agency Reuters, on 3 July. The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, said: “The government has not issued a new blocking block on 3 July 2025 and has no prominent international news channels, including Reuters and Reuters World.”
He added that “the moment that Reuters and Reuters World were blocked on X -platform in India, immediately wrote the government to ‘X’ to unblock them. The government involved and strongly involved with ‘X’ from the late night of July 5, 2025.”
He further said: “X has unnecessarily exploited the technical details about the process and the URLs did not unblock. After a lot of follow-up on per hour, X finally blocked Reuters and other URLs after 9 p.m. on July 6, 2025.
What happened?
The X account of Reuters was deducted in India for a few hours, but recovered later on Sunday after the government intervened to say that it had not searched for blocking the handle. The X account of Reuters was blocked to approach India at night, which led to speculation. The government asked the Elon Musk platform for a statement and said it hadn’t looked for such a step. X has recovered access to the account shortly thereafter.
