Cardiff comes from two to beat Nottingham | Pro hockey news

Cardiff Devils opened their Challenge Cup campaign with an emphatic late show to achieve a 6-3 victory over Nottingham Panthers in the MotorpPoint Arena.

Cardiff first hit a short-handed goal at the start of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead when the attempt by Ryan Barrow beyond Jason Grande from David Noël’s skate was deflected. The visitors were grateful to Ben Bowns, who pulled an early competition for Save of the Season to keep them ahead, so that Chase Pearson denied with his skate of a point-blank reach.

Bryan Lemos brought the match just over a minute in period two with a quick shot past Bowns, while Matthew Marcinew’s tip shot for 25 minutes on the shot of Matt Spencer.

After a great diving defense stick on one side, the Panthers Ice went up and moved 3-1 ahead thanks to David Noël, who was in front of him within 10 minutes of the period. The devils were given an advantage of four minutes after a high stick on Riley Brandt and withdrew a goal when former Panther Kristoff Kontos shot from the point on the resulting Powerplay.

Jason Grande’s Stretch Save denied Josh MacDonald an equalizer early in the period three, but they didn’t have to wait long to draw level – Nolan Yaremko, in the room on the powerplay at 48:18, made it 3-3. Seventy seconds later Ben Davies was in the right place to bring a deflated shot from the top of the fold and to lead the devils. Brandon Estes made it 5-3 with just under 90 seconds to go, while nine seconds later Cole Sanford added to the last score with the sixth of the Devils.
