Montreal-de Canadian teen Victoria Mboko disrupted the top placed Coco Gauff on Saturday evening 6-1, 6-4 to reach the National Bank Open Quarterfinals.
“Your support was incredible,” said Mboko, 18, the crowd in French after a choir of “Olé, Olé, Olé!” Hans echoed around the location. “I am really happy to win today. … It is incredible. I am so happy to beat such a great champion.”
Gauff, 21, fell to 2-3 since winning the French open. She followed the big win with opening losses in Berlin and Wimbledon then conquered problems with double errors to win two three sets in Montreal. Gauff had five double mistakes on Saturday after 23 in her opener against Danielle Collins and 14 against Veronika Kudermetova. She also had 24 casual mistakes.
“She plays tennis at a high level,” said Gauff. “I think that is what was shown today. I think she was the better player.”
Mboko, arranged as 85th in the world, finished Gauff in 1 hour, 2 minutes.
“When I was 5-4, the crowd started to cheer even louder and everything became super noisy,” said Mboko. “I used that as more fuel for myself and to pump myself a little more. I used the crowd as much as possible to my advantage.”
Mboko will be confronted with Jessica Bouzas Maleiro from Spain, a 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 winner on Lin Zhu of China in a rain-outdated game that ended just before midnight.

“I really thought a lot during the competition,” said Mboko. “I had flashbacks when I played her a bit in Rome. I remember that she just got out even better and stepped a little better. I wanted to pick up my game a little more and make sure that I matched everything she produced, and I wanted to stay with her.”
Earlier, 24th placed Marta Kostyuk van Ukraine and ninth placed Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, a quarter -final set up successively. Kostyuk defeated McCartney Kessler of the United States with 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and Rybakina at the top of Dayana Yastremska van Ukraine 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
