Alex de Minaur admits that it was not beautiful, but he booked his place in the final of the Washington Open after demolishing the Frenchman Corentin Moutet. In promising signs prior to the US Open of next month, the Australian No. 1 and seventh seed stormed to a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the event where he reached his first ATP 500 final in 2018.
Although not perfectly served, twice broken, the Minaur the world no. 59 broke five times out of his 10 service games in the victory, which lasted an hour and 45 minutes.
The 26-year-old World No 13, however, will have to lift his game in the final, after 33 casual mistakes against the Frenchman, including 21 in the first set, and 21 on his backhand for the game.
“It wasn’t pretty tennis, but I knew it would be a difficult match without much rhythm,” said the Minaur. “That is what he can do with opponents. I had the mentality to do what was needed to get to the title match tomorrow.”
Part of his game that worked well in the semi was on the net, where he won 17 out of 22 points when he regularly attacked the weaker Backhand wing of maltet.
The Minaur, who would like to go one step further in Washington after losing straight sets by Alexander Zverev in the German Alexander Zverev in the final of 2018, improved to a tour leading 21 hard profits for the season.
The Aussie also has 41 victories at ATP 500 level since the beginning of the 2023 season, which is most by every player.
The Minaur returns to the top 10 in the ranking after reaching the final, where he will encounter the 12th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
