British number two Cameron Norrie is open from the Canadian open after a surprising defeat of the second round by World Number 99 Aleksandar Vukic.

The 29-year-old suffered a 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 loss for the Australian.

Norrie, now arranged 39 after his run to Wimbledon’s quarterfinals at the beginning of July, won a singles title in 2023 for the last time.

While he registered a number of good victories during the grass-court season, he has not taken over that momentum to the hard courts so far, making him quickly 3-0 lower in the opening set against Vukic, 29.

Norrie seemed to struggle with disease and had his blood pressure checked halfway through the second set, but fluid through the game.

However, the failure to take advantage of one of his three breaking points in the decisive set interrupted by the rain eventually cost him against his non-sown opponent.

In the women’s event in Montreal, World Number Three Iga Swiateek won her first game since he stolen the Wimbledon title and the Chinese qualifying match Guo Hanyu served six times on the way to a 6-3 6-1 success.

Four-time Grand SLAM champion Naomi Osaka has saved successive match points to overcome 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.

The 27-year-old survived breakpoints in the 10th game of the second set, before he returned from a 5-2 deficiency in the Tie-Break.

The Japanese Osaka, the world number 49, took on her first success against a top 20 player since he defeated Karolina Muchova on the Australian Open in January.

Now he worked with Tomasz Wiktorowski after she announced on Monday that she had broken down with coach Patrick Mouratoglou, Osaka Samsonova broke twice in the decisive set to win.

After ending a loss of four games in meetings with three set, she will be confronted with Jelena Ostapenko in the third round after the Latvian Renata Zarazua 6-2 4-6 6-2 defeated.

The British number one Emma Raducanu is in action against Peyton Stearns on Wednesday.
