The tensions were high in Bethpage Black on Saturday afternoon, when the American team tried to return to a position after Europe had expanded their lead to 8.5-3.5 in the morning foursomes.
Scottie Scheffler and Bryson Dechambeau were in the middle of a tightly disputed four-ball match with Europe’s Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood when those tensions finally cooked on the 15th hole and resulted in a heated exchange involving both players and Caddies.
To summarize the scene: Justin Rose waved the Caddie of Deschambeau while Rose stood in line. According to NBC on-course Reporter Smylie Kaufman, there might have been confusion about who was gone. But Rose left his putt and then Dephambeau answered with his own brand to bind the gap.
Europe eventually won the matches 3 and 2 – another dagger for the ailing American team. After the round, Rose shared his version of events.
“I was waiting for Putt,” he started. “The boys clearly worked on their lecture, of course continuing with their calculations and pieces and bits. So I waited a few seconds, and then I had the feeling that they were coming up again. I asked – it is my putt, right? Or how I said it, maybe I said it was not as polite in the moment, but no means was a bit or anything else.”
On Sunday, prior to the singles matches, Scott gave a public apologies while he was standing next to Molinari. His caption was: ‘One of the best men and I am sorry for our conflict. @Chiccogolf shows his friendliness continuously. Thanks Fran. “
At the start of the video, Scott wrapped his arm around Molinari.
“This guy here has always just been a very sweet-healthy man,” said Scott. āWe had a heated moment yesterday, but what many of you do not realize is that we came over it. By the time we walked the 16th tee, it was over and none of us wanted to make this competition about us.
“We want to let the players go outside and do their thing and it is clear that Team Europe kicks our butts and hopefully we can make a little more right today, have a better competition, give the fans what they want, but in the end I just want to spread love and joy,” Scott continued. “It’s a great competition. It’s a lot of fun, and this is a great man here. So I just want to say that I am sorry against you, brother.”
The two shaking hands. “I appreciate you,” replied Molinari. “Like I told you, I have enormous admiration for you and love you. I look forward to another great day.”
