Trainer Derek Ryan was without obligation Book’em damageParticipation in the Breeders’ Cup world championships, but he is such a cool horse that he is worth watching up close, regardless of where he makes his last start of the 2025 season.
The best racing in America is to explore leading contenders for the 14 races that include the Breeders’ Cup world championships. This week we evaluate Book’em Danno after he has evaluated an outgoing starting place in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile 1 November 1 in Del Mar with a victory of one length in the $ 500,000 Stakes on the Saratoga Race Course on 23 August.
Ryan told Nyra that Book’em will be in sixth and last race of the year in one of the following races: the $ 250,000 Vosburgh Stakes in Belmont in the Big A, the $ 400,000 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes 3 October. Van Book’em Danno can apply the “win and you’re in” challenge series that are earned from the preference in the direction of the sprint instead of the dirty miles.
Performance: Consistency has been a characteristic of Book’em Danno from the start. He won 10 of his 16 career start and his only two non -planned finishes came when he was fourth, beaten by a neck in a wild finish in the grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes presented by Ford in May, and last December when he was fifth in the degree 2 Sigar Handicap, presented outside.
Simply put, book’em Danno brings it every time he competes. He won a few bets as a 2-year-old, achieved his first graded Stakes victory in Saratoga in the grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes, and this summer wiped through three Graded Stakes Sprints in Saratoga.
The Bucchero-Ruin won the 6 ½ Furlong Real Northern commitment with 1 ¼ lengths on a sloppy track and the six-Furlong Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes with 2 ½ lengths July 19 for the August 23 ForeGo.
Book’em Danno really seemed to have his work cut for him after following a length of a fast half mile in: 44.85, but he groove determined in the piece and completed his last furlong in: 13.03 under Paco Lopez for a length of length.
“It is the competitive character,” Ryan said when he was asked what Book’em Danno makes special. “He doesn’t have a pedigree, he’s not a nice mover – he is just a running horse. You would never think it sees him train every day, he just works around.”
Speed figures: Book’em Danno came in a few sample efforts in terms of speed figures, and earned a career-best 119 EQIBase speed figure for the true north and a 115 for the Vanderbilt. He also earned a career-top 106 Beyer Speed figure for the true north and then improved it with five points to an 111 for the Vanderbilt. The speed figures for the foregoing – 100 Equibase – Value Figure, 98 Beyer – indicate that he did not have his “A” game and still beat a great group of sprinters in seven Furlongs.
“I was a bit scared because he ran the time in front of such a big race that he might be a bit back, which I think he did,” said Ryan. “But he is such a game horse, he thought it was a way to get it done.”
Looking ahead: After three races in 11 weeks, Book’em looks like a racing horse that would benefit from a short scope. For that reason, I think that training to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint would be a great option. He is absolutely fast enough to win the race and he has the tactical speed to stalk and pounce, which has been very important in the sprint in the last 25 years. The Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner of last year, Straight No Chaser, followed the trend because it was 1 ½ length of the pace after half a mile.
Of course, Book’em Danno could win the Vosburgh in five weeks or the Phoenix in six weeks, but with 10 weeks between the Forego and the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, he would get the chance to recover from a busy and productive summer and get the best sprinters in the world that rested and are talented enough to win. He is a 4-year-old gelding with a lot of racing to look forward to, so I understand and respect the decision Ryan and owners Atlantic Six Racing for his last start of 2025. If it comes in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Book’em Danno is a big profit candidate.
