Harness Racing is a sport of highlights and lows – and few know that this week more than Victorian Ruiter Damien Burns and his family.
Only a few days after celebrating the news that their former stable star hesitement had protected a coveted lock in the 2025 tab, the family now has its blessings after a frightening float accident this morning (July 28).
Damien was on his way from his Ballarat stables to the Maryborough tests with stable runners Maxo Mighty and Elle Perfecto then struck a disaster.
The stable placed on social media that Damien was forced to take evasive action after the alleged vehicle had become on the wrong side of the road.
The post said that both horses remained calm during the test and safe from the wreck thanks to a fast and selfless team effort from bystanders and fellow racing participants, including Stephen Byne, Brody Burns, Matt van Mitchell Racing and Annemarie Kemmink.
The horses were taken to AK&K Horse Services, where they were assessed and found only small cuts and bruises while Damien escaped with scratches and bruises and now recovers at home.
The family shared their Enlightenment and gratitude in an emotional post on social media, writing:
“No matter how much this is a huge kick in the guts for us, at the end of the day everyone is fine and that is really all that matters. We live to fight another day.”
