An Elite Darwin Builder has launched his own family house after making the masterpiece for years.

The architecturally designed and tailor -made ‘Boomerang House’ on 10 Conjevoi Cres, Nightcliff was completed in 2023 and was described by the marketing agent as one of the best houses in the area.

Richard Oliver, owner of ROC NT, and his wife Paula, bought the building at 10 Conjevoi Cres, Nightcliff, in 2017 with plans to eventually create a new house.

Oliver said at the time that it was the cheapest and probably the worst house in Nightcliff.

“It was an absolute hut,” he said.

“But we had always dreamed of living in Nightcliff.”

The couple lived in the old house for a few years, while Mr Oliver built his company and houses of other people.

They eventually started the construction process by limiting what they wanted.

“We designed three different houses on that building before we arranged one on one,” said Mr Oliver.

“It was the intention of the (chosen) design that made us choose.

“It is deliberately designed for the position and I think it is a deliceer and suitable for the area.

“A house must fit in with the housing around it and the community – that was probably what clicked with us the most.

“The previous designs were very bloky, hard construction.”

The carpenter became Builder said the house showed the skill and explored a series of materials that had probably never been used in a house in Darwin.

“We wanted to show what could be done with Build based on challenges instead of following the term,” he said.

“We wanted to build something exciting, something energy efficient, something that lives the tropical atmosphere, indoor-outdoor, raining the wet season and immersed yourself in drying season weather.

“We wanted our own oasis in resort style.”

Oliver said they used as many raw materials as possible.

“We wanted it to be minimal and seamless, but we also wanted it to be sensory experience there,” he said

“There is the beautiful natural stone wall, natural wood and concrete.

“I am very proud of it and Paula is too.

“She did it incredibly.

“The inspiration and everything in that house has been 100 percent because of Paula.

“It would not look like it did without her behind it.”

The house is on a private block of 988 m² and has high ceilings, open spaces, concrete floors, wood ceilings, adapted joinery, sunken lighting, microcement, windows from floor to ceiling and a stone wall.

There is an open living and kitchen space and a separate living room, all of which open to the outdoors.

The matte black kitchen has a concrete island bench, Butler’s pantry, hidden devices and on-demand boiling and sparkling water.

The main suite has a vast walk-in jacket, sliding door to the patio and a micro-cement ensuite with walk-in shower and terrazzo vanity.

The three other bedrooms in the main building have built -in robes and the family bathroom has peached microcement, detached bath and walk -in shower.

Outside, the beautifully landscaped garden has a curved fire place area, an Italian Bisazza mosaic tiled swimming pool and a covered pavilion with outdoor kitchen, wooden ceilings and fans.

The pool house can be used as a guest suite or home office and has an outdoor pool room in Balinese style.

“The boomerang shape of the house is perfect for families,” said Mr. Oliver.

“It goes to the central courtyard and there are places to escape, but you are all still together.

“Having overhangs on the building gives all that shade and you can have all doors open and you will not get wet when it rains.

“It is also a great house to entertain.”
