Bucks may view the lottery as their last chance to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo

Some league insiders tell Marc Stein of the Stein Line that they believe the Milwaukee Bucks remain hopeful that a lucky lottery result in May could lead to a scenario where they can keep Giannis Antetokounmpo with the franchise. Antetokounmpo has finally made it clear he’s ready to move on with the Bucks and doesn’t see the team as capable of fielding a championship-caliber roster around him, but a high draft pick in a deep draft could change the calculus.

The Bucks have no control over their own draft picks this season, as the Atlanta Hawks will get the more favorable selection between Milwaukee’s pick and the New Orleans Pelicans. But since both the Pelicans and Bucks could potentially have high lottery odds, Milwaukee could still end up with a pick as high as No. 2.

With the opportunity to draft one of Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa or Cameron Boozer, the Bucks could potentially trade that pick for a true star who can pair with Antetokounmpo.

“There are teams that believe Milwaukee thinks this way,” Stein wrote.

With this potential scenario being one of numerous factors, sources say the Bucks are expected to wait until the offseason to trade Antetokounmpo.

If the Bucks don’t get lucky in the lottery, they could move forward with trading Antetokounmpo and possibly for a package more valuable than what could be offered at Thursday’s trade deadline.
