The Hockey Team of Boston University had difficulty generating attacking opportunities for a large part of Sunday’s game. Nevertheless, a strong defensive performance and goals from Junior Gavin McCarthy, first-year student Jonathan Morello and first-year student Ritchie on Sunday raised the number 2 Terriers (1-0) to a 3-0 exhibition victory on RPI (0-0) in Agganis Arena.
After a non-transmitting seasonal victory on Liu on Saturday evening, the Terriers seemed in store for a similar performance on Sunday. During the first period, BU 11 shots had nine in a relatively 20 minutes on net until RPIs. The Terrier defense improved en masse in the next two periods, while the attack by BU took a little more time to wake up.
Here are four take -away restaurants of the exhibition profit.
The growing pins of BU showed two periods attacking.
Faced with an engineering team that ended 50th in the couple last season with a record of 12-21-2, the Terriers came out slower than expected. BU’s first goal did not come to the 15:46 point of the second period. Junior Captain Gavin McCarthy shot a right circle pole in a crowd of bodies. The Puck brought the stick of RPI defender Gunnar Vandamme and flew high into the air, over the shoulder of RPI -NetMinder Nate Krawchuk, and in the back of the net. Sophomore Assistant Captains Cole Hutson and Cole Eiserman gathered the assists.
BU struggled to generate degree-a-opportunities and looked relatively pedestrians during an equal game until the third period.
BU’s Defense Limited RPI’s opportunities.
The defense, however, limited the chances of RPI after the first period. RPI had nine shots on goal in the first period and had several high-quality chances after BU turnover. One of RPI’s best chances of the night came in the first period after a turnover of the defensive zone by Junior Mick Frechette, who directly led to an RPI clapping shot by Mathieu Bourgault who called the crossbar.
After the first period, however, RPI only registered 12 shots on goal, many of which came too late with an empty net. Two of them came in a second period where Junior goalkeeper Max Lacroix saved a first shot from the point and then a vast pillow on the rebound attempt. Lacroix stopped all 21 Shots he was confronted for.
The terriers ended with 29 shots on goal to RPIs 21.
BU stayed out of the penalty box.
After they led the nation last season, the Terriers gathered 10 penalty minutes against Liu on Saturday evening, including six in the first period.
When asked about the penalties after Saturday’s open, said head coach Jay Pandolfo: “We can’t have the same start as last year from a discipline position.”
BU has solved the problem in Sunday’s exhibition, which was whistled for only one penalty, a bank trout for too many men, operated by first-year defenders Kim Kim at 12:41 of the second period.
The Terriers killed the only penalty with relatively ease, and the best chance of the series came on a short -a -killing chance for second -year Brandon Svoboda, which was rejected by Krawchuk at the door.
Sacha Boisvert left the game in the first period.
After attempting to have tried a first period of the left circle during his second service of the game, second -year student Sacha Boisvert clattered in the shelves behind the net. His main and neck area seemed to be in an uncomfortable corner. The first-line center, which also appeared on BU’s first Power Play and Penalty Kill units, went to the tunnel and did not return to the exhibition match. Boisvert had a three -point night, with a goal and two assists, against Liu on Saturday.
Pand game said Postgame that Boisvert was being held to “precautionary measures”.
“We wouldn’t bring him back tonight. It’s not worth it,” said Pandolfo. “He has been picked up a bit, but I think it should be good.”
Filling on the first rule in addition to second -year student Cole Eiserman and first -year student Ryder Ritchie were first -year student Bruins Prospect Jonathan Morello, who started the competition as the fourth rule center of Terriers, and senior Owen McLaughlin, who centered the third line. Sophomore Kamil Bednarik took the place of Boisvert on the first Power Play unit, in addition to Eismanman, Ritchie, McLaughlin and second -year student Cole Hutson. The penalty kill was led by Svoboda, Bednarik, first -year student Malte Vass and Junior Aiden Celebrini.
How it happened.
McCarthy opened the score at 3:46 PM of the second period on a right circle litter in a crowd of bodies.
First -year Jonathan Morello doubled BU’s lead with a power play point at 9:47 Mark from the third period. An extensive power play, with 28 seconds of 5-on-3 action, ended with a Morello slapshot of the left circle on a feed by Hutson. Hutson skated around two engineering defenders to enter the attacking zone before he found Morello with a Cross-Cice Pass, who buried Morello in the upper corner of the stick side.
Ritchie scored an empty net goal at 6:39 PM of the third period to seal the victory for the terriers. Eiserman and Bednarik took care of the assists.
