The 2025 Walker Cup on Cypress Point gave Golffans a look at one of the most prestigious jobs in the world. While the famous course along the Monterey -Schiereiland was the main character in this week between America and Great -Britain and Ireland, the Golf eventually surpassed the host.
GB and I stood out for an early 3-1 lead after the opening session of Saturday Foursomes. But the Americans responded in Saturday Singles, with Bryson Dechambeau who encouraged them and won 5.5-2.5 to take a lead from one point to Sunday.
“I think only he in general means so much to us,” said the American captain Nathan Smith about Deschambeau. “He held them a pump state last night, which they loved and put them going. You know, 36 [holes] Is a long day, so they were ready to play today.
Deschambeau remained around Sunday to watch the Americans, led by World No. 1 Amateur Jackson Koivun and the 18-year-old American amateur winner Mason Howell, on a fifth consecutive Walker Cup victory.
The two parties distributed the Sunday Morning Foursomes sessions, where Howell gave the moment of the day when he kept his approach to the 17th to win the game and put a point on the board.
The 2-2 split in the Sunday morning session meant that the US entered the Sunday Singles section with a lead of 8.5-7.5, with 4.5 points to keep the cup and five to win it.
Koivun started things for the Americans on Sunday evening. De Wereld No. 1 Amateur went out in the first game and defeated Luke Weaver 3 and 2 to inch the American closer to the cup.
Morrison followed with a 3 and 2 win over Niall Shiels Donegan to bring the US within 2.5 points of cup retention.
While the fog inside and made visibility for the players difficult, the American team kept his foot on the gas with its goal in sight. Ethan Fang rolled over Stuart Grehan 5 and 4 and Howell stopped his match with Connor Graham to stretch the pipe to 12-8. The Putt of Graham to win the game was keeping track of, but hit the lip of the cup and edge.
With the Americans one point away from retention, Stewart Hagestad, who played in his fifth Walker Cup, rolled in a long Birdie putt through the Cypress point fog to send Eliot Baker 4 and 3 and give the Americans the cup.
“Credit to everyone for doing their work,” said Hagestad, who is now 7-1 in Walker Cup singles matches, after the match to NBC’s Kira K. Dixon. “The timing could not have worked [better]. I’m just so happy that it went inside. I hit it a little hard, but every putt is a straight putt if you hit it hard enough. ”
Not a minute after the bomb of Hagestad, Preston Stout left no doubt by beating his approach to the 17th by beating the extractable fog and getting it on a foot to win his match over Luke Poulter and to ensure that the Americans did more than just keep the cup.
“I just blown away,” said the American captain Nathan Smith after the victory of his team. “They showed up all weekend. I mean, both singles competitions in the afternoon and I don’t know if I have ever seen a Walker Cup team bringing the way they did in Singles this afternoon.”
When the dust established on Sunday evening, with the fog thicker than ever, the Americans had won 17-9. They went 8.5-1.5 in Sunday singles in a not to stop show of talent and power that certainly made an impression on the double US Open Champion, and Ryder Cup ‘Weapon’, who was present.
