Bruno Fernandes reached two “massive milestones” for Man Utd during Saturday’s victory over Chelsea in the Premier League.
The Portuguese playmaker opened the score in a manic first half in which Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was sent away and Enzo Maresca made the fastest three substitutions in the Premier League history.
Casemiro doubled the host’s lead before being sent deep into the first half, the added time. Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back in the 80th minute, but the Red Devils held three vital points.
Bruno Fernandes ‘very proud’ of reaching Man Utd Milestones
The opener was the 100th goal that Fernandes scored for Man Utd, no less on his 200th appearance. But the 31-year-old responded to the performance with humility in his comments after the game.
“Every goal is important, does not matter,” he told Sky Sports after the last whistle.
“A big moment for me to reach that milestone for a huge club, I will not hide from that. If I can get more goals to help the team, that’s the most important.”
With BBC Sport, Fernandes said: “Of course I am very proud of that, two huge milestones. Not something I strived for. I just wanted to play the next game.”
It was a much needed victory for Man Utd, who had won only eight times in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim before this weekend.
Fernandes continued: “You want to perform, but at the end of the day it is important. We didn’t get the points we wanted.
“At the end of the game we were very strong in defending our box and placing them in positions of intersection.
‘We have the [Chelsea’s] Red Card because our mentality started the game so strongly. The players must fall behind when Ben (Sesko) goes for the ball and that is what Bryan (Mbeumo) did. “
Casemiro’s broadcast had the potential to derail what their most impressive version of the season was so far, but they kept Chelsea on arm length and limited them to only three shots in the second half.
“It didn’t change anything,” the man from the man utd added. “We wanted to close. Without Delap who makes the runs for the team, Joao Pedro wants to join.
“We gave them the chance to go off the side and then close them with our wingbacks. Our center backs were very good to defend the box.”
