The BCCI has made a major change in its fitness program for cricketers. The much-discussed-overjojo test has been dropped and instead the Bronco test, a new exercise that requires repeated sprints of 20, 40 and 60 meters.
Former captain of South Africa, Ab de Villiers, has warned Indian players about how difficult this test can be. He admitted that he first did not recognize the term, but once he was explained to him, he knew all too well.
“I was not aware of the term, but I knew what it was when the team explained it. I started to do it when I was 16 years old. It is called the Sprinthehaal power test in South Africa,” said the Villiers.
The size requires that players complete the shuttle runs of 20m, 40m and 60m five times in a row, which is up to 1200 meters. The key is to finish it as quickly as possible without breaks, which pushes both speed and endurance to the limit.
Ab de Villiers recalls the pain
De Villiers said the test every time empty. “It is one of the worst you can do. I can remember that it was in super sport park in the winter, with less oxygen. The height here is 1500 meters above sea level. The lungs would burn out because of less oxygen,” he remembered.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has also questioned the decision. He believes that a sudden change in training methods can risk injuries for players who are used to a different style of conditioning.
The Bronco test can help the selectors and trainers to measure endurance in a new way, but with worries of both previous players and current voices, it is still to be seen how Indian cricketers take on this latest challenge.
