House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan on Tuesday referred former CIA Director John Brennan at the Justice Department for criminal charges for knowingly making false statements during a May 2023 interview with the House Judiciary Committee.
Jim Jordan’s criminal referral relates to John Brennan’s false statements to Congress about whether the CIA relied on the Hillary Clinton-funded Steele dossier in preparing the ICA report.
“We write to refer to significant evidence that former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) John Brennan knowingly made false statements during his transcribed interview before the Committee on the Judiciary on May 11, 2023.1 While testifying, Brennan made numerous willfully and willfully false statements about material facts that were contradicted by House records Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) and the CIA,” said Jim Jordan’s letter to Bondi.
“Under 18 USC § 1001, a witness commits a crime if he “knowingly . . . makes every material falsity. . . statement or declaration” relating to “any inquiry or survey made under the authority of a committee.” . . of Congress[.]”2 Congress cannot fulfill its oversight function if witnesses appearing before its committees do not provide truthful testimony. Making false statements before Congress is a crime that undermines the integrity of the committee’s constitutional duty to conduct oversight,” Jordan said.
Here is Brennan’s conversation with former GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, in which he falsely claims that the CIA had no involvement in the Steele dossier at all:
Mr. Gaetz: Okay. So the fact that the DNC provided the funding for the development of the Steele dossier doesn’t give you any grounds for bias?
Mr. Brennan: Again, that happened in 2016. . . . I understand how you could have linked this to my reference to my expertise, but I don’t see any relevance to the Hunter Biden laptop issue now.
Mr. Gaetz: Well, you said that you signed this letter in which we now acknowledge that Joe Biden took advantage in a debate to fool the American public, because you are a great Russia expert, so I’m trying to understand your Russia expertise. And you were involved in analyzing this information.
Mr. Brennan: No, I was not involved in the analysis of the file at all. I said the first time I actually saw it was after the election. And the CIA wasn’t involved at all
file. You can report that to the FBI and others.
Mr. Gaetz: Were you aware of the FBI’s involvement in the dossier?
Mr. Brennan: Yes, because there is an annex in the ICA, the Intelligence Community Assessment, which the Bureau has requested to be included. It was their jurisdiction, their territory, not ours at all.
“Ultimately, according to documents released by the Trump administration, the decision to include information from the Steele dossier in the ICA “was made jointly by the directors of the CIA and the FBI.[.]’16 A senior FBI analyst confirmed this fact, telling HPSCI that, after several days of debating whether information from the dossier should be included, ‘the higher levels [at FBI and CIA] decided to put it in,” Jim Jordan wrote.
“Brennan’s claim that the CIA was “not at all involved” in the Steele dossier cannot be reconciled with the facts. As the newly released documents show, a CIA officer prepared the appendix summarizing the dossier; Brennan made the final decision, along with then-FBI Director James Comey, to include information from the dossier in the ICA; and, as discussed further below, Brennan overruled the top decision, along with then-FBI Director James Comey. CIA officers who objected to the inclusion of the dossier material,” Jordan said.
John Brennan also falsely testified that the CIA was against including the Steele dossier in the ICA report.
Jim Jordan was also accused of lying to Congress during a 2017 HPSCI hearing.
John Brennan lied to Congress.
Today we referred him to the Department of Justice for criminal charges.
